Visa-Free Stay for Americans
The United States is part of Japan's visa exemption program. This means US citizens traveling with a valid passport do not need to apply for a visa before arriving for short-term visits.
You can stay in Japan for up to 90 days as a "Temporary Visitor."
Allowed Activities during your 90-day stay:

- Visiting friends or relatives living in Japan.

Japan Entry Requirements
While you get 90 days visa-free, you still need to satisfy Japanese immigration officers at the border. Ensure you have the following ready when you land:
1. Valid Passport
Your US passport must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in Japan, with at least one blank page for the landing stamp.
2. Proof of Onward Travel
A return ticket to the US, or a flight showing you are leaving Japan for another destination before your 90 days expire.
3. Visit Japan Web (VJW)
Highly recommended: Fill out your customs and immigration forms online before arrival to generate a QR code for faster processing.
4. Accommodation Details
Have the name, address, and phone number of your hotel or host ready, as you must provide this on your arrival card.
Can Americans Extend Their Stay in Japan?
Generally, the 90-day visa-free stay is strict. For standard tourism, you cannot simply walk into an immigration office and ask for an extension just because you want more time to travel.
Exceptions & Longer Stays:
- 1Medical Emergencies: If you are hospitalized or physically unable to fly, immigration may grant a special short-term extension upon providing medical proof.
- 2Visa Runs: Some travelers fly to South Korea or Taiwan for a weekend and re-enter Japan to get a fresh 90 days. While technically possible, immigration officers may deny entry if they suspect you are trying to live in Japan illegally (rule of thumb: max 180 days per calendar year).
- 3Long-Term Visas: If you plan to study, work, or stay long-term, you must apply for the appropriate Student, Work, or Digital Nomad visa through a Japanese embassy before arriving in Japan.

It is strictly illegal to engage in any paid work in Japan while on a 90-day Temporary Visitor status. This includes working remotely for a local Japanese company or taking local gigs.
Overstaying Your Welcome
Even overstaying by one day is considered a serious immigration violation. It can result in detention, deportation, and being banned from re-entering Japan for several years.
No Proof of Departure
Airlines will often deny you boarding at your US departure airport if you cannot show a ticket leaving Japan within your 90-day window.
