ETIAS Travel Authorization Guide (2026): Requirements, Cost, and How to Apply

Traveling to Europe is about to undergo a significant change. If you're a citizen of a visa-exempt country—like the United States, Canada, the UK, or Australia—you have likely enjoyed the freedom of boarding a flight to Paris, Rome, or Berlin with just your passport. Starting soon, that will change with the introduction of ETIAS.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is an electronic travel authorization—not a traditional visa—designed to pre-screen visa-exempt travelers before they enter 30 specific European countries.
Similar to the United States' ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) or Canada's eTA, ETIAS aims to improve border security, reduce illegal immigration, and protect against health and security threats by running applicant data through multiple international security databases.
When Will ETIAS Start?
The ETIAS system has faced multiple delays over the years, but the European Union has confirmed it will officially launch in the first half of 2025/2026.
There will be a transitional "grace period" of approximately six months after the system goes live. During this time, ETIAS will not be a strict requirement for entry, but travelers will be strongly encouraged to apply. Following the grace period, holding an approved ETIAS will become a mandatory condition for entry.
Who Needs ETIAS?
If you currently do not need a visa to travel to Europe for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period), you will need an ETIAS. This impacts citizens from roughly 60 visa-exempt countries.

Countries That Require ETIAS
An approved ETIAS will be required to enter 30 European countries. This includes the 29 countries in the Schengen Area, plus Cyprus (which is in the process of joining Schengen).
- Full Schengen Member States: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal, etc.
- EFTA Countries (Schengen members): Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein.
- Future Schengen Members: Cyprus.
ETIAS vs. Schengen Visa

How Long Is ETIAS Valid?
An approved ETIAS is valid for three (3) consecutive years, or until the passport you used during the application expires—whichever comes first.
During this validity period, you can enter the required European countries an unlimited number of times, as long as you respect the standard Schengen rule: staying no more than 90 days within any 180-day period.
How Much Does ETIAS Cost?
The application fee for ETIAS is €7.
However, the fee is entirely waived for applicants who are under 18 years old or over 70 years old. Family members of EU citizens or of non-EU nationals who have the right to move freely throughout the EU may also be exempt from the fee.
How to Apply for ETIAS
The application process is designed to be fast and entirely digital. There is no need to visit an embassy or mail your passport anywhere.
1Step 1: Gather Your Documents
You will need a valid biometric passport with a machine-readable chip, a credit or debit card to pay the €7 fee, and a stable internet connection.
2Step 2: Complete the Online Form
Fill out the form on the official ETIAS website. You will provide personal details, passport information, travel plans, and answer basic background questions regarding criminal history or past travel to conflict zones.
3Step 3: Pay the Fee and Receive Approval
Submit the €7 payment. For the vast majority of applicants, the automated system will issue an approval email within minutes. If flagged, manual review takes up to 96 hours.
What Happens If Your ETIAS Is Denied?
If your application is refused, you will receive an email explaining the reasons for the denial. The email will also include information on the authority that made the decision and instructions on how to appeal. Appeals are handled by the specific European country that processed and rejected your application.
Does ETIAS Replace a Visa?
No. ETIAS is not a visa. It is a travel authorization strictly for tourism, transit, or short business trips. If you plan to study, work, or live in Europe for more than 90 days, you must apply for the appropriate long-stay national visa from the country you intend to reside in.
Common ETIAS Mistakes Travelers Make
- Waiting until the airport: While approvals are usually fast, technical issues or manual reviews can delay approval. Do not wait until you are at the departure gate.
- Using unofficial websites: Apply only via the official EU website. Third-party sites charge exorbitant fees.
- Entering passport details incorrectly: Typos in your passport number will result in an invalid ETIAS.
