Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Bali?
Yes, United States citizens traveling to Bali (and the rest of Indonesia) for tourism purposes are required to have a visa. However, the process is very straightforward.
You do not need to visit an Indonesian embassy beforehand. Instead, you can utilize the Visa on Arrival (VOA) program.
- e-VOA (Recommended): Apply online through the official Indonesian immigration website before your trip. This lets you skip the payment lines at the airport and head straight to immigration.
- Physical VOA: Purchase the visa directly upon arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Bali.
Bali Visa on Arrival Details
- Stay DurationValid for exactly 30 days (your arrival day counts as Day 1).
- Entry TypeSingle Entry. If you leave Indonesia, the visa is invalidated and you must buy a new one to re-enter.
- Extension InfoCan be extended exactly ONE time for an additional 30 days (total 60 days).

Entry Requirements for Americans
To successfully enter Bali, US passport holders must present the following documents to immigration authorities:
Valid US Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of arrival, with at least one blank page.
Return or Onward Ticket
Proof of a flight leaving Indonesia within your visa validity period. Airlines will check this before boarding.
Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD)
A mandatory online customs form to be filled out within 3 days of your arrival. Generates a QR code for scanning.
Tourist Levy (Bali Only)
A newly introduced regional tax of 150,000 IDR (~$10 USD) specifically for foreign tourists entering Bali.
Optional but Recommended Documents:
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking for at least the first few nights).
- Proof of sufficient funds (though rarely asked for typical tourists).
Can Americans Stay Longer in Bali?
If 30 days isn't enough, you have several options for extending your stay on the Island of the Gods.
1. Extend the VOA (Up to 60 Days)
If you enter on a standard VOA, you can visit a local immigration office (or use a visa agent) to extend it for an additional 30 days. If you entered using the e-VOA online, you can also process the extension entirely online without visiting an office.
2. B211A Visit Visa (Up to 180 Days)
Often called the "Social/Cultural Visa" or long-term tourist visa. You must apply for this online before arriving. It gives you 60 days initially, and can be extended twice for 60 days each time, totaling up to 6 months.
3. Digital Nomad & Second Home Visas
Indonesia recently introduced longer-term options for remote workers, investors, and retirees, granting stays of 5 to 10 years. These require significant financial proof and background checks.
